Crockpot Apple Butter

Crockpot Apple Butter Recipe

Apple butter is a delightful spread that's perfect for toast, biscuits, or even as a topping for pancakes. We also like to add apple butter to our pork. Using a crockpot makes this recipe incredibly simple and allows the flavors to meld beautifully over time. Here's an easy and delicious recipe to make your own apple butter at home.

Ingredients:

  • 6 pounds of apples (a mix of sweet and tart varieties like Fuji, Granny Smith, or Honeycrisp works well)
  • 3 cups of granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Apples: Peel, core, and slice the apples. You can use an apple corer and slicer to make this process quicker and more uniform.
  2. Combine Ingredients in Crockpot: Place the apple slices into the crockpot. Add the granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Stir everything together to ensure the apples are well-coated with the sugar and spices.
  3. Cook the Apples: Set your crockpot to low and cook the apple mixture for 10 hours. I usually cook mine overnight. Stir occasionally. As the apples cook down, they will become soft and caramelized.
  4. Blend the Mixture: After 10 hours, the apples should be very tender and dark brown. Use an immersion blender to puree the mixture until smooth. If you don’t have an immersion blender, you can carefully transfer the mixture to a regular blender in batches.
  5. Final Cooking and Flavoring: Continue cooking the apple butter on low for an additional 2 hours with the lid slightly ajar to allow steam to escape. This will help thicken the apple butter.
  6. Storage: Once the apple butter reaches your desired thickness, turn off the crockpot and let it cool slightly. Pour the apple butter into sterilized canning jars and seal. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or process in a water bath canner for longer shelf life.
  7. Notes: I have a large crock pot and can fit a double batch in mine.

Enjoy your homemade apple butter on your favorite baked goods, pork, or give it as a thoughtful, homemade gift!
