Naan Bread

Craving that delicious naan bread you recently had at the restaurant? This recipe will help you make that restaurant-quality naan bread you are craving. It is a very versatile flatbread that pairs well with a variety of dishes, from curries to dips. With just a few ingredients and no special equipment, you can enjoy authentic naan bread at home.

Here’s a simple recipe to guide you through the process we used to make our own naan bread. Some recipes will add some yeast to the dough and let it rise. I would add about 1 teaspoon to this recipe if you wanted a fluffier naan bread.

Homemade Naan Bread Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 Teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 1/2 to 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • pinch of salt
  • 6.4 ounces of plain fat free Greek Yogurt
  • ½ tablespoon of butter
  • Optional: minced garlic, chopped cilantro, or nigella seeds for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • Reserve a small amount of the flour for dusting. In a large mixing bowl, combine the rest of the flour, baking powder, and salt.
    • Make a well in the center and add the yogurt, melted butter, warm milk, and the activated yeast mixture.
    • Mix until a soft dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, gradually add more flour until it becomes manageable.
  2. Knead the Dough:
    • Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
    • After you have kneaded the dough, we cut ours into 8 strips and rolled each strip into a ball.
    • Roll each ball into a tear-shaped or oval flatbread, about 1/4 inch thick. We rolled ours into a rectangular shape.
  3. Cook the Naan:
    • Heat a cast-iron skillet or non-stick pan over medium-high heat.
    • Place one rolled-out dough piece onto the hot skillet. Cook until bubbles form on the surface and the bottom is golden brown, about 1-2 minutes.
    • Flip the naan and cook the other side for another 1-2 minutes.
    • Remove from the skillet and brush with melted butter or ghee. You can also sprinkle with minced garlic or chopped cilantro if you want to.

Serve the naan bread warm with your favorite dishes. It’s perfect for soaking up sauces or as a base for various toppings.
