Hurricane cocktail history

The Hurricane cocktail originated in New Orleans during the 1940s at Pat O'Brien's bar. Due to a surplus of rum during World War II and a shortage of Burbon and Scotch whiskey, bar owners in the French Quarter were encouraged by suppliers to purchase large quantities of rum in order to get access to other liquors. To use up the excess rum, bartenders created the Hurricane, a fruity and vibrant drink often served in glasses resembling the shape of a hurricane lamp.
