The beauty of using prepacked gnocchi is that you can customize it to your taste and flavor preferences. We like to serve ours as a side dish, but it can be used in Soups and one dish meals with chicken.

Gnocchi (pronounced "NYO-kee,") is a classic Italian dish, loved for its soft, pillowy texture and versatility. These small, pillowy dumplings have been a staple in Italian cuisine for centuries. Traditionally made from potatoes, flour, and eggs, these delightful morsels offer a versatile base for a variety of sauces and toppings. The origins of gnocchi trace back to Roman times when similar dough dumplings were made using semolina or bread. Over time, the recipe has evolved, and the introduction of potatoes gave rise to the version most well-known today.

Ingredients:

  • prepackaged gnocchi
  • salt
  • spice blend (see recipe below)

Spice Blend:

  • 1 Tbs. dried oregano
  • 1 Tbs. Italian breadcrumbs
  • 1 Tbs. Parmesan cheese
  • 1 Tsp. garlic powder
  • 1.2 Tsp. dried basil

Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl.

Traditional Preparation:

  1. Bring Water to a Boil: Fill a large pot with water and add a generous pinch of salt. Bring the water to a rolling boil.
  2. Add the Gnocchi: Open the package and add the gnocchi to the boiling water. Stir gently to prevent them from sticking together.
  3. Cook the Gnocchi: Let the gnocchi cook until they float to the surface of the water, usually about 2-3 minutes. Once they float, they’re done.
  4. Drain the Gnocchi: Using a slotted spoon or a colander, carefully drain the gnocchi, shaking off any excess water.
  5. Serve or Sauté: You can serve the gnocchi immediately with your favorite sauce, or for a bit more flavor, we like to sauté ours. In a cast iron skillet over medium heat adda little olive oil. Once the olive oil is hot toss in the cooked gnocchi and sprinkle with our spice blend. Sauté until they are golden and crispy.
