Brats with Beer and Onions

Are you looking for a quick and easy way to take your brats to the next level?

I suggest you try brats with beer and onions. This is a super simple, classic and hearty dish that brings together the rich flavors of German cuisine with a touch of the American barbecue spirit. These are perfect for a summer cookout or a cozy winter dinner. This dish is as versatile as it is delicious.

The key ingredients—bratwurst sausages, beer, and onions—come together to create a mouthwatering combination that is sure to satisfy any palate.

Until a few years ago I had never had brats prepared this way and now it is the only way I cook them. We serve this dish often when we have summer get togethers. Discovering this has been a game changer for me when it comes to brats. We will even cook extra of them so we can have them for lunch throughout the week.

To prepare this dish, start by selecting your favorite flavor and brand of bratwurst sausages, as they are the star of the meal. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, over medium heat, add the thinly sliced onions and a little of the beer. You want to be sure to add enough onion slices so that everyone has come to put on their brat. Cook the onions until they become soft and translucent, then add the brats and the rest of your favorite beer—preferably a lager or pilsner. These types of beer will complement the flavors without overpowering them. Allow the mixture to simmer, letting the beer reduce and the brats cook through completely, absorbing the savory notes of the beer and onions. Once they have cooked in the Dutch oven, we like to put the brats on the grill or Blackstone for a few minutes before they are served. This allows for the outside of the brat to brown up a little bit and get the look and texture of being grilled. IF you don’t want to heat up your Blackstone or grill you can sear the brats in your Dutch Oven once you have cooked the onions and before you add the rest of your beer.

Serve the brats nestled in warm buns, topped with the beer-soaked onions, add your favorite condiments like ketchup, mustard, sauerkraut, or pickles for an extra burst of flavor. Pair this dish with a side of potato salad, coleslaw, or grilled vegetables to complete the meal. Brats with beer and onions is not only a crowd-pleaser but also a testament to the beauty of simple, flavorful cooking. Enjoy this delightful dish with friends and family and relish the comforting taste of this timeless classic.
