BLT Sandwich

Sometimes the simplest recipes are the best. The classic BLT sandwich is proof that a few quality ingredients can create something special.

This classic sandwich is beloved for its simple yet flavorful combination of ingredients. To make the perfect BLT, you'll need just a few basic components: bacon, lettuce, tomato, bread, and mayonnaise. The key to making this sandwich exceptional lies in the quality and preparation of each ingredient.

One of my favorite summer meals when I was a kid was the classic BLT sandwich. As soon as the tomatoes are ripe mom would pick some from our garden. The bacon would come from a hog that was raised on the farm. In my opinion those are the two most important ingredients: garden-fresh tomatoes and the quality of bacon you use. Now that I am older and my dad no longer raises hogs, I have tried many different brands and cuts of bacon. A lot of grocery stores around us run meat specials where you can get 4 or 5 packs of meat for $19.99. This is how I typically buy my bacon. I keep out the amount we were going to use, sort the rest into the serving sizes we need, vacuum seal it, and put it in the freezer. This is a great way to save money and stock up on meat (you can mix ‘n match pork, beef and chicken depending on what you need).

Whether you are looking for a quick lunch idea, or an idea for a family gathering or just because you are craving something amazing, this iconic sandwich delivers comfort in every bite.

Here's a step-by-step guide to crafting a delectable BLT sandwich.

Ingredients:

  • Fresh tomatoes (from a garden or produce stand preferably)
  • bacon
  • Lettuce
  • Bread
  • Miracle Whip or Mayonnaise (which ever you prefer)

Instructions:

I like to get my lettuce and tomatoes ready. Start by washing and drying wash fresh lettuce leaves. Romaine or iceberg lettuce works best for their crisp texture. Take your garden-fresh tomato and slice it. Slice a ripe tomato into even, medium-thick slices or whatever thickness you prefer.

Once my vegetables are ready, I like to cook my bacon. A thicker-cut bacon will give you a more substantial bite, but I usually pick bacon that is somewhere between thick and thin. Cook the bacon until it reaches your preferred level of crispiness. There are many different ways you can cook bacon: you can use a cast iron skillet over medium heat, in the oven at 400°F (200°C) for about 15-20 minutes, in the microwave for a quicker option, or we prefer to cook our bacon outside on the Blackstone grill (this way we can cook the entire package at one time). Once it has cooked, drain the bacon on paper towels to remove excess grease. While the bacon is draining, I like to make my toast.  I used the Blackstone to make my toast.  I melted some butter on the Blackstone and then I put my bread down and toasted it for a few minutes on each side (until it reaches your desired level). By using the Blackstone I was able to cook my loaf of bread all at once.

For the bread, choose a hearty variety like sourdough, whole wheat, Texas toast or a rustic country loaf. Once again it is whatever kind of bread you prefer. Toast the bread slices until they're golden brown. Spread a generous layer of Miracle Whip or mayonnaise on one side of each slice of toasted bread. To assemble the sandwich, layer the ingredients in the following order: start with a slice of bread, then add lettuce, followed by tomato slices, and finally the crispy bacon. Top it with the second slice of bread, mayonnaise side down. Cut the sandwich in half, if desired, and serve immediately. Enjoy your perfect, classic BLT sandwich!
