Tuna Steak Fish Tacos with Tomato & Avocado Salsa

Tuna steak fish tacos are a delightful twist on the traditional taco, offering a fresh and healthy alternative to the usual beef or chicken fillings.

These tacos combine the rich, meaty texture of seared tuna steaks with vibrant, fresh toppings, creating a culinary experience that is both satisfying and nutritious. The key to making perfect tuna steak fish tacos lies in cooking it just right—usually seared briefly on each side to keep the center rare and tender.  Tuna Steaks are something that I check every time I go to the grocery store to see if they are sale (when they are I stock up and place some in my freezer to use later).

Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 10 minutes Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

Tomato & Avocado Salsa:

  • 1 large tomato diced
  • ¼ cup red onion diced
  • 1 jalapeno diced
  • 2-3 Tbsp. lime juice
  • ¼ Tsp kosher salt
  • 1/8 Tsp freshly ground pepper
  • 1 avocado diced
  • Cilantro (¼ cup chopped fresh or 1 tsp dried)

Fish Tacos:

  • 1 Tsp ground cumin
  • 1 Tsp salt
  • 1/4 Tsp cayenne pepper or to taste
  • 8-ounce fish fillets (we used a tuna steak)
  • 2 Tbsps. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 4 corn tortillas warmed

Instructions:

  • Prepare the salsa.  Combine tomato, onion, jalapeño, kosher salt and pepper, lime juice to taste in a medium bowl.  Stir in avocado and cilantro and cayenne pepper if you are using any.  I started with 1 Tbsp. of lime juice and added more as I needed to.

  • Prepare the tuna. Combine the cumin, salt and cayenne in a small bowl (we used a ramekin).  Gently pat the tuna steak dry and sprinkle the spice mixture on the Tuna steak fillet. In a cast iron skillet add the oil and heat over medium-high heat. Sear each side until it reaches the way you like it. For a medium tuna steak the internal temperature should be 130 – 140 degrees F which is about 6 minutes per side for a 1-inch-thick tuna steak.

  • Assemble the tacos. Use soft corn or flour tortillas (prepared according to the package or your preference) and load them with the sliced tuna. Top with some homemade salsa and an optional drizzle of sriracha or hot sauce for a bit of heat. For a final touch, garnish with fresh lime wedges. These tuna steak fish tacos are perfect for a quick weeknight dinner or a fun weekend gathering, offering a delicious fusion of flavors and textures that are sure to impress.
